Magnetic Exploration Part 1: Magnetic Play

Author(s): Seth Bush
Subject: Physics
Grade Level(s): Grade 4
Topic: Magnetism
Big Idea(s):

  • Students know that magnets have two poles (north and south) and that like poles repel each other while unlike poles attract each other.
  • Differentiate observation from inference (interpretation) and know scientists’ explanations come partly from what they observe and partly from how they interpret their observations.

What you need:

  • Magnet Kit

Grouping: Play independently first then play in groups

Summary:

Magnetic Play; is an open inquiry activity designed to give you a chance to explore
magnetism and rediscover why magnets are so cool.

Learning Goals / Objectives:

1.) Students will gain a hands on understanding of many properties of permanent magnets. In particular they will learn

  • About magnetic poles and their interactions with each other
  • How to visualize and measure magnetic fields
  • What materials are magnetic and what materials are not magnetic
  •  How to characterize the field strength of a permanent magnet

Anticipatory Set:

Driving Questions
1.) How do magnets work?
2.) How does a compass work?
3.) How can we “see” magnetic fields?

Instructions / Activities:

Imagine you have never seen a magnet before …

1.) Play with your magnets.

2.) Keep playing.

3.) Take a moment. . . and play some more.

4.) If you have discovered anything really cool, show your neighbor.

5.) Can you make your magnets do any tricks? (Show your neighbor).

6.) Put your observations in words:

  •  Try to describe a magnet.
  •  Try to describe what happens when two magnets are brought close together.
  • Try to come up with a set of rules for how magnets behave.

7.) Group share: descriptions and rules.

Assessment:
