rock cycle activities
Author(s): Tino Aleman and Jaime Cuello
Subject: Earth Science
Grade Level(s): Grade 4
Big Idea(s): How are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks related to one another?
The Rock Cycle
What you need: GLAD lessons on butcher paper.
Oreo cookies,
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
Setting: Small cooperative groups, GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition and Development) Pictorial/Graphics, Hands on Activities
Time Needed: 45 minutes to 1 hour

Summary:

Students will learn the relationship between gneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks .
Students will learn the rock cycle.
Ingneous Rocks are intrusive and extrusive and are associated with volcanoes. Sedimentary rock are layered, formed when earth is eroded and particles or sediments flow down river and are them compacted and cemented together. Metamorphic rock are formed with heat and pressure.

Learning Goals / Objectives:

California standard: 4.a Students know how to differentiate among igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic Rocks.
6.a Science Content Differentiate observations from inference

Background

students uses prior knowledge of eating Oreo cookies, peanut butter, jelly sandwiches, and burritos to make connections to earth science

Setup:

Classroom, students in groups of four, and physically the desks are moved to create a large flat table surface

pictures/diagrams of GLAD activities

Anticipatory Set:

Used experience with eating different foods: Oreo cookies, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and burritos
Talk about volcanoes
Experiences with rocks
Special modifications for students: go over cognate vocabulary for English Language Learners
pictures/diagrams on butcher paper

Instructions / Activities:

1. Create erosion or weathering with an Oreo cookie
2. use Oreo cookies to model sedimentary rock.
3. Use P & J sandwiches to model sedimentary rock
4. Use huevo con chorizo burrito to model metamorphic rock.
5. Students discuss activities and draw results
6. Students report back orally

Assessment:

Teacher observations,
teacher made quizzes and test,
Role playing assignments,

Wrap-up / Closure:

English Language students label using cognates in science journal.
Also students can do the following activities in preparation for open house, science night, science fair
Art projects,
and writing assignments (writing paragraphs or poems).
